SPARTANBURG, SC – The Coastal Plain League is excited to announce Wesley Brown as the head coach of its newest baseball team here in Spartanburg.
“This is a dream opportunity for me and my family,” stated Brown. Not many in my profession can say they are a college and high school coach at the same time. I look forward to growing the team into one of the best the CPL has to offer.”
Currently the head baseball coach at Spartanburg High School, Brown has compiled a 168-67 record in 9 seasons. His teams have one multiple championships over his career and was name the South Carolina Coach of the Year in 2015. More than 100 of his former players have gone on to play college baseball with several drafted by Major League Baseball.
Brown is no stranger to Duncan Park, as the historic stadium has served as the home field of the Spartanburg (High School) Vikings beginning in 2007.
“We couldn’t be more excited to have Wes be our first field manager,” said Spartanburg General Manager, Claudia Padgett. “His connection to the community and passion for baseball exemplify what the CPL is all about.”
Name the Team Update
More than 650 entries were submitted during the first phase of the name the team contest.
“The response from the region was outstanding,” stated Padgett. “We are currently reviewing and tallying the submissions and plan to announce our list of finalists shortly. We look forward to the public helping us select the final team name.”
The Spartanburg baseball team is a member of the Coastal Plain League, a summer collegiate baseball league operating with 15 teams across North and South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia. CPL players are college athletes seeking to improve their skills against high level competition. The season begins in late May and concludes in early August.
